Camp Counselors: Perception vs. Fact

Camp counselor personas

Perhaps you’ve seen these funny memes floating around the Internet. I don’t know about you, but I find the last two (Superman and TP’d counselor) to be synonymous.

These images show traditional camp counselors and perceptions, but we know that ALL camp counselors (sports, music, art, science, etc.) are super heroes to their campers and the directors who depend on them to give kids a great camp experience.

They ALL deserve a universal standing ovation from those of us who care about kids and believe in the power of camp.

Ann Yetsko at Merri-Mac camp wrote a glowing endorsement for job candidates who have “camp counselor” on their resumes, saying that they are:

  • Good communicators
  • Life-long learners
  • Self-starters
  • Resilient
  • Problem solvers
  • Creative thinkers
  • Detail-oriented workers
  • Leaders
  • Team players
  • Possessors of a solid work ethic

(The entire article is worth a read.)

Camp counselors punch a hole in popular observations about self-absorbed young people. These amazing traits really do describe what drives those individuals who are drawn to the crazy world of camp counseling.

Garrison Keillor quote

As with most jobs where people give their all, profuse GRATITUDE is the best response.

Today, we applaud and thank all the camp counselors who happily invested their summer in the most important job in the world: pouring into kids.
