It’s Time to Get Ready for #GivingTuesday!

#GivingTuesday#GivingTuesday (December 1) is the charitable answer to the Black Friday/Cyber Monday (November 27th and 30th) push to consumerism. As the foundation’s website puts it:

We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

#GivingTuesday was founded in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. Together, with a team of influencers and founding partners, we launched a global movement that has engaged over 30,000 organizations worldwide.

Get Your Share of the Generosity

Along with the matching donations you line up, the interest generated through #GivingTuesday publicity can help kick off your year-end fundraising campaign and attract more donors (and dollars) for your mission. If you’re not a nonprofit, you can also fundraise for your favorite cause.

Many organizations start their campaigns in August and September, but there’s still plenty of time to get your nonprofit registered. In addition to the tools and resources #GivingTuesday itself offers, there are many third-party organizations that can help you build a successful campaign as well, including:

Build Your Donor Base

One way you attract donors to your cause is by drumming up sponsors to match donations. This can be used to create urgency (i.e.all donations between 10 and 11am will be matched) or can include a maximum limit (i.e. up to $1000).

Think beyond one-time donors. Broaden your campaign ideas to include ways to build relationships with donors.

Don’t Get Crazy

Once you start researching, you’ll see a lot of options and ideas that can easily overwhelm and discourage you, especially since there are only about 9 weeks left. Even if it feels like you don’t have time to “do it right,” wade into the shallow end this year as a way to learn the ropes and start the cogs turning for an even better campaign next year.

Don’t Forget to Donate

Even if you can’t run your own #GivingTuesday campaign, join in to support the effort to balance out all the consumerism by donating to a cause you care about. The #GivingTuesday site lists the participants by category.
