The 3 New Year’s Resolutions Every Director Should Have

Focus on sun 2016

Are your New Year’s Resolutions essentially a wishlist?

If that’s you, you’re not alone. It’s tough for all of us to stick to our high hopes for change in a new year. The #1 piece of advice I’ve seen offered to reverse that trend is to break our goals into actions steps. That’s good advice, but you still have to choose the big goals.

That said, these resolutions every director should have are high level because they mean something different to everyone and can’t just be “done.” No worries, though. I’ve taken the liberty of suggesting a few action steps that can make them real for you!

Tim Ferriss quoteGet Inspired

What if we don’t follow through on resolutions because they’re uninspiring or boring? Author Tim Ferriss challenges people to raise their ambition level so that they’re inspired to take the necessary actions goals require. Consider this:

“99% of the world is convinced they are incapable of achieving great things, so they aim for the mediocre middle-ground. The level of competition is thus fiercest for “realistic” goals, paradoxically making them the most time- and energy-consuming. It is easier to raise $10,000,000 than it is $1,000,000.

If you are insecure, guess what? The rest of the world is too. Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think.

Unreasonable and unrealistic goals are easier to achieve for yet another reason. Having an unusually large goal is an adrenaline infusion that provides the endurance to overcome the inevitable trials and tribulations that go along with any goal. Realistic goals, goals restricted to the average ambition level, are uninspiring and will only fuel you through the first or second problem, at which point you throw in the towel.”

Sound familiar? I (a non-runner) once trained for a 5k fund-race during one of the busiest and most stressful situations of my life precisely because of this quote. It seemed impossible, given my circumstances. Despite many prior resolutions to add exercise to my schedule, this time, I did it. I raised the required $300 in 3 days and came in third in my age group in the run because I was inspired.

What can you do that seems so impossible-but-inspiring that you might just stay on track to fulfill it?

  • Refresh your passion for kids, dance, music, sports, art, or whatever it is that used to ignite you
  • Launch the dream venture you never thought you could
  • Automate, delegate and rearrange things in your camp, school or program ‘til you are mostly doing only the things that only you can do, the things you got into this business to do*

tony robbins quoteMAKE REAL DECISIONS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION THIS YEAR

This is not simply an admonition to take action, but to banish indecisiveness from your life. Of course, you make many decisions every day, but you know the ones you’ve been stalling on. Procrastinating on decisions is, in truth, deciding not to decide. Weighing our options is important right up to the point where it becomes an indefinite failure to act.

One reason for indecisiveness is often that we don’t have enough data to make informed decisions. If that’s the case, which of the following action steps can you take to make decision-making easier?

  • Spend time regularly with a mentor who is a few steps ahead of you in the game
  • Subscribe to reliable sources of information about your industry or specific challenges (blogs, newsletters, etc.)*
  • Take advantage of software that provides reliable data to inform your initiatives*

I find that when you’re meeting #1 (Get Inspired), this one almost takes care of itself!
